Hold Fast

Hold Fast is rooted in the legend of St Veronica, the woman who, according to medieval tradition, wiped Christ’s brow as he carried the cross, leaving a miraculous imprint of his face on her veil. Though not found in the gospels, the story became one of the most enduring relic traditions of the Middle Ages.

But this painting is far more than an exploration of religious myth. The background features modern Brighton landmarks, anchoring the scene in the present, while text scattered throughout reflects personal moments from 2021 and summer 2024. The Greek lettering corresponds to the characters within the image, adding another layer of historical reference.

At its heart, Hold Fast is a tribute—a dedication running along the far left edge honors Mike Georgeson, Jeremy’s high school art teacher, mentor, and friend, who passed away just before this painting began. It was Georgeson who gave the lasting advice: “Be a spanner in the works” and “Screw the system for all you can get.” His impact on Jeremy’s life and work was profound, and this painting stands as a small statement of eternal gratitude.
