About This Piece
Inspired by the 8th-century Navigatio of St Brendan, Gilla Na Naem explores one of the most surreal and symbolic episodes of medieval legend. St Brendan, an Irish saint famed for his mythical sea voyages, encounters an island known as the Paradise of Birds, where fallen angels—once part of Lucifer’s rebellion—now exist as spirit-birds, repenting for their past.
The Navigatio has fascinated scholars for centuries, with interpretations ranging from real-world exploration—leading to Tim Severin’s recreation of a 6th-century sea voyage to America—to a spiritual allegory reflecting medieval monastic life. Jeremy’s take blends these historical narratives with his own present-day reflections, incorporating raw, expressive text and contemporary elements into the painting.
A diary in paint, Gilla Na Naem merges medieval storytelling with modern expression, layering oil, acrylic, spray paint, and pen on canvas (60x80cm). The dense textures and layered details reflect the struggle and depth of its creation. Signed and dated on the back.
