About This Piece

Ego Patricici explores the myth, history, and contradictions surrounding St Patrick, one of the most debated figures of early Christianity. Jeremy draws from both Patrick’s own writings and the later medieval legends that reshaped his story.

At the heart of the painting is the antlered Patrick, inspired by a 7th-century account where he and his companions evade capture by transforming into deer. The real Patrick—by his own admission—was a British bishop kidnapped by pirates at sixteen, enslaved in Ireland for six years before escaping, only to later return as a missionary. But almost everything about him is debated, including his death date, burial site, and even his role in Ireland’s conversion.

As with all of Jeremy’s work, history collides with the personal, layering the imagery with diary-like elements and contemporary reflections. The result is a painting that sits between fact, faith, and artistic interpretation—much like Patrick’s own legacy.
