About This Piece

Inspired by Byzantine maps of Constantinople and the lost Church of Christ Pantocrator, this painting explores the meaning of Pantocrator—‘ruler of all’—through both ancient and contemporary lenses.

The Greek lettering is drawn from traditional Orthodox icons, translating to ‘Lord of Hosts’ and ‘Ruler of All’, while the four Hebrew characters represent the name of God, emerging from Christ’s mouth. But alongside this historical and religious imagery, the piece is layered with Jeremy’s modern anxieties, observations, and personal experiences—including references to various illnesses written through the painted organs, and even a nod to his cat’s recent dental surgery and medication.

The result is a dense, textured, and deeply personal work, where thick layers of paint reveal the struggle behind its creation. A hybrid of medieval inspiration and lived experience, Christ Pantocrator is both an exploration of faith and an intimate self-portrait of the artist’s mind at the time of painting.
