About This Piece

Inspired by Book 1, Chapter 48 of the medieval Latin biography Life of St Columba, this painting reimagines the tale of an exhausted heron rescued by Columba’s monks. While rooted in history, the scene is layered with contemporary elements—tower blocks rising beside the central figure, a nod to modern landscapes intruding upon ancient narratives.

Jeremy’s "diary painting" approach blends medieval storytelling with the present, creating a visual dialogue between past and present. Originally, Brighton Pavilion stood in the background, later replaced to bring focus to the composition. The result is a dynamic, richly textured piece that captures both the serenity of nature and the tension of changing environments.
